Couple Dyes Waterfall Blue For Gender Reveal Not Knowing They Polluted An Entire City’s Water Supply

A couple are in hot water in Brazil after deciding to dye the waters of a stunning 60 foot waterfall bright blue to celebrate their baby’s gender reveal party on Sunday.

The parents-to-be were accused of causing an environmental disaster in the river, which serves the nearby town of Tangará da Serra in the state of Mato Grosso, during their 50-person party.

The pair – not formally identified in local media – posted videos of the event on social media yesterday before hastily deleting them when there was a massive outcry.

The town has experienced periods of drought which have affected its water supply, and so any contamination of the water source in the name of a gender reveal party will not be well-received by locals who depend on it.

Outraged social media users brought the stunt to the attention of local authorities who have launched an investigation and sent a team to the waterfall.

‘The inspection will investigate the environmental damage caused by the material thrown into the water,’ the Environment Secretary for the state of Mato Grosso (Sema-MT) said in a statement.

‘If there is an environmental crime, those responsible will be charged and may be held accountable for an environmental crime.’

The Municipal Environment Department is also monitoring the case, according to reports.

A man named as Anderson Reis, reported as being one of those responsible for the waterfall dyeing stunt by Brazilian outlet G1, denied that a chemical product was used to produce the blue colour.

However he said he would only comment further once the environment secretary had completed their investigation.

The event was held on Sunday Sept 25 on a private property crossed by the Queima Pé River in Tangará da Serra , 242 km from Cuiabá, the state capital.

The waterfall is 18 metres (59 feet) high and located six kilometres from the centre of Tangara da Serra. The site is famous as a destination for ecological tourism activities.

But the stunt backfired with many on social media demanding that the couple should be arrested for an environmental crime.

Others warned of possible water contamination for people further downstream.

After the videos went viral the Secretary of State for the Environment of Mato Grosso state confirmed they are investigating the matter to find out if there had been an environmental crime committed.
